The Munsterkerk stands in the old centre of Roermond. According to the parish, it is the only remnant of an abbey for Cistercian nuns founded in 1218.

Under the dome stands the tomb of Count Gerard of Guelders and his wife Margaretha of Brabant. VVV Hart van Limburg calls it the oldest European funerary monument depicting a married couple.

The Munsterkerk also changed in later centuries. According to the VVV, a major restoration lasted from 1863 to 1890. After the 1992 earthquake the towers were rebuilt to plans by Cuypers. An audio tour is available on request, according to the VVV.

The church is at Munsterplein 1-3. In October it is open daily from 14:00 to 17:00, according to the parish. The main portal is accessible from 08:00 to 17:00 for lighting a candle.

Outside the centre, the VVV mentions the Roer, the Maas and the Maasplassen as options for water activities. Forests, heathland and riverbanks also belong, according to that tourism site, to the landscapes around Roermond.
