New cycle bridge planned across the Leidsevaart

Preparations have begun near the N208 in Haarlem. The route should offer cyclists an alternative to the pedestrian bridge ’t Kwakeltje, with completion expected in late June 2027.

North Holland province began setting up the worksite for a cycle bridge across the Leidsevaart near the N208 in Haarlem on 5 October 2026. The bridge itself is not yet under construction: foundation work is scheduled to start on 4 November.
The new path will run between Claus Sluterweg by Coornhert Lyceum and Leidsevaartweg, crossing the water on a bridge. Many cyclists now use the pedestrian bridge ’t Kwakeltje. The province says this sometimes creates unsafe situations; the new link is intended particularly for school pupils.
The provincial design shows a slab bridge resting on two piers in the water. Its railing will be 1.30 metres high and screen cyclists’ movements, a request from the nearby De Houttuinen care home. The design addresses traffic safety while taking account of neighbours.

The province schedules construction of the bridge and cycle crossing from November 2026 to early April 2027. The connecting path and links to public roads will follow in stages. Completion of the whole project is expected in late June 2027.
Since 5 October, the right-hand lane of the N208 towards Heemstede has been closed for the works; traffic uses the other lane. The right-turn lane on Leidsevaartweg towards Heemstede is due to close from 2 November, although turning right will remain possible. The consulted sources do not confirm a specific cycle diversion during construction.
