A music route at the heart of a week in Zwolle

Common Ground expands from one evening of routes to eight days of music. A bookshop, churches and cycle routes become part of the programme.

Common Ground Festival starts with its route event on Saturday 10 October 2026 and continues in Zwolle through 17 October. Jazz, classical music and other styles sound at venues across the city. The organiser still calls the route event the heart of this fifth edition.

On opening night visitors can choose from ten routes. Each links four half-hour concerts at three venues around Thorbeckegracht and the Museum Quarter. Every route passes through Van der Velde bookshop in the Broeren church; the other two concerts on each route remain a surprise. The route shapes how you encounter both the music and the city.

The expansion has an organisational background. Common Ground says it has belonged to Zwolle’s cultural funding structure since 2026. Director Tibor Elferink and business manager Nora Hulsink say that the security of multi-year support made it possible to grow from one day to a full week.

On Sunday 11 October, Op de Fiets heads beyond the city centre to three concert locations in the surrounding countryside. The organiser describes a 40 to 50 kilometre ride, with standard and gravel options. On 15 October the free Fringe brings pop-up concerts to shops, cafés and cultural venues.

The final Saturday, 17 October, has another rhythm. Night Mode mixes electronic music and club culture with jazz and neoclassical music at the Achtergracht creative hub. Its programme lists four stages and runs from 8 pm until 2 am.

Doors for the Routes evening open at 7 pm and the first concert begins at 7.30 pm. One checked sample route costs €49.50 at the standard rate, €29.50 for students and €15 for visitors up to and including 18; individual concerts are not sold. Check the ticket shop for the current availability of a particular route.
