Chocolate, biscuits and paper connect workshops with homes in Zaanstad. The Zaans Museum preserves objects about life and work in the Zaan region. Its Verkade collection brings advertising, packaging and production lines together. A machine explains how a product was made; a tin or album shows how that product found a place in everyday life.

The Tsar Peter House in central Zaandam offers another connection between working and living. Peter the Great stayed here in 1697 when he came to learn shipbuilding. The wooden house survives inside a protective building added later. The two structures belong together but represent different stages in preserving the site.

In Zaandijk, the Honig Breethuis focuses on the domestic life of papermaking families. Its historic furnishings connect a family account with the business that shaped their lives. This house museum offers a separate addition to the example day below. That day combines the Zaans Museum with the Tsar Peter House, leaving time for lunch and travel between the Zaanse Schans and central Zaandam.

Zaans Museum

The Zaans Museum examines residents, work and industrial heritage in the Zaan region. Its Verkade collection includes advertising, packaging and production lines for chocolate, biscuits and night lights. Factory production and everyday life meet in the same display.

This example assumes an ordinary Tuesday to Saturday when both museums are open, outside their closure dates. The Zaans Museum and Tsar Peter House occupy different sites. An hour and a half allows lunch and travel between visits. The programme covers a selection; the Honig Breethuis is a separate addition.

11:00–13:00 · Zaans Museum

The morning is for the Zaans Museum at the Zaanse Schans. Everyday objects and the Verkade display connect production with use. The suggested window allows a selection from the museum.

14:30–15:30 · Czaar Peterhuisje · Krimp 23, Zaandam

The afternoon moves to the Tsar Peter House on Krimp. The house recalls Peter's stay in 1697 and is protected by an outer building. The stone enclosure and wooden house have different accessibility.

At the Tsar Peter House, preservation itself forms part of the history. During the nineteenth century, supports, foundations and a covering structure were added to protect the wooden building. Both the house and its enclosure are national monuments. The brick exterior in the photograph is the protective building around the older wooden house.

Papermakers at home

The Honig Breethuis at Lagedijk 80 in Zaandijk was home to the entrepreneurial Honig and Breet families, who worked in white-paper production. The museum reconstructs the period of occupation in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Furnishings and hand-painted wallpaper give the family account a concrete form. The house has its own visiting arrangements.
