Steenwijkerland

Steenwijkerland changes character as a route moves between its towns and villages. The large photograph shows central Steenwijk, with shop façades and a church tower behind them. Elsewhere in the same town stands villa Rams Woerthe, home to the Hildo Krop Museum and its presentation of the artist’s varied work. The photograph beside the museum section shows that villa’s exterior. Town centre and museum building offer two separate starting points for exploring the municipality.

In Giethoorn, Museum ’t Olde Maat Uus explores village life. A farmhouse, fisherman’s house and boathouse connect personal stories with peat extraction and local customs. The museum addresses both the landscape and daily life within it. A multilingual audio tour is included in admission. Winter opening begins in November, so an afternoon visit finishes earlier than in summer.

Near Sint Jansklooster, attention turns to De Wieden. Routes and an exhibition at the visitor centre introduce the area’s history, plants and animals. The photographed boardwalk passes through tall vegetation. In Blokzijl, Het Gildenhuys explores the relationship between the town and water. The municipality therefore lends itself to several visits rather than one hurried circuit.
