Schouwen-Duiveland

A model ship on Schouwen-Duiveland tells more than a story about sailing. At Stadhuismuseum Zierikzee, maritime history sits alongside silver, maps and paintings. The municipal collection brings together objects from several former town halls. Its home in the old town hall on Meelstraat gives this history a setting of its own, connecting the town with the island and the surrounding waters.
In Brouwershaven, the emphasis shifts towards work at sea and around the harbour. The Brouws Museum holds model ships, navigational instruments and charts. These objects add another scale to the harbour outside: the place where goods and fishing boats once met can also be understood through the equipment used there. Zierikzee and Brouwershaven complement one another, each keeping its own local history.
A day combining the two museums can pair a morning in Zierikzee with an afternoon in Brouwershaven. The interval allows for lunch and travel between the towns. The harbours and the Dikke Toren are separate subjects with their own visiting calendars. That distinction matters particularly in winter: a view of the harbour belongs to the town, but cannot establish whether a museum is open or a historic vessel can be boarded.
A museum in Zierikzee

Stadhuismuseum Zierikzee
The former town hall houses a municipal collection of model ships, silver, historic maps and paintings. Objects from former town halls across Schouwen-Duiveland helped shape the collection. Its scope therefore extends beyond Zierikzee to the island and the waters around it.

More about the Dikke Toren

The Sint-Lievensmonstertoren stands at Kerkplein 2 in Zierikzee. Centree uses the Dikke Toren for exhibitions and a climb with views from a height of 62 metres. Its published calendar distinguishes April to October from the Christmas and spring school holidays. Holiday opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00–16:00, with the last climb an hour before closing. This does not establish daily opening during the other winter weeks.

Brouwershaven as a seaport
Brouwershaven served as a transshipment port and a base for fishing boats. As sea channels silted up, it took over a seaport role from the increasingly inaccessible Rotterdam between 1838 and 1870. Models, instruments and charts at the Brouws Museum give this history a material form.
