Heerlen

The towers of Hoensbroek Castle and the Oranje-Nassau I shaft building are very different landmarks within the municipality of Heerlen. The castle has water, bridges and furnished rooms; the mining monument connects the surface with former work underground. A photograph of a building does not, by itself, explain its visitor arrangements. The castle has its own visitor circuit, while the shaft building opens on announced Open Schacht dates.
In the centre, other ways of collecting and presenting sit alongside one another. SCHUNCK uses the Glaspaleis for art. De Vondst on Raadhuisplein explains the journey from archaeological find to display case. A depot, conservation workshop and public area each have a role in that process. An object does not simply become a museum exhibit: it needs investigation, care and sometimes restoration.
The centre remains busy outside exhibition spaces too. On Saturdays, market stalls occupy the Bongerd and Promenade. The Glaspaleis stands on the Bongerd, allowing a market morning and a visit to its open art spaces to fit together. The museum hall and atrium are currently closed; individual spaces within the building follow their own visitor arrangements.
Castle in Hoensbroek

Kasteel Hoensbroek
Hoensbroek Castle at Klinkertstraat 118 has furnished rooms, vaults and spiral staircases. Its visitor circuit reveals the building on different levels. Activities on announced dates complement the ordinary visit. The winter photograph from January 2010 shows a different side of the castle from the image at the top of this page.

A day in Heerlen

An example for an ordinary Saturday, excluding public holidays and exceptional closures. The Bongerd and Promenade market runs from 09:00 to 17:00. At SCHUNCK, the Kunstdepot and exhibition space on +1 and the vide on 0 normally open on Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00. The museum hall on −1, atrium and Aad de Haas room are currently closed; the museum hall reopens from 21 November 2026. An hour between the two parts allows for lunch and the short move between them.
10:00–11:00 · Saturday market on Bongerd and Promenade
The morning begins outdoors among the market stalls on the Bongerd and Promenade. The municipality lists produce, fish, bread, fabrics and household goods among the offerings. This is the ordinary Saturday market, distinct from the seasonal Curiosamarkt.
12:00–13:30 · SCHUNCK — open spaces in the Glaspaleis
SCHUNCK at Bongerd 18 follows, using the open spaces of the Glaspaleis: the Kunstdepot, exhibition space and vide. The glass-fronted building was photographed in April 2025. The route is limited to the spaces with announced opening hours.
More about the mining monument

The Oranje-Nassau I mining monument at Mijnmuseumpad 2 is a different location from the Nederlands Mijnmuseum at Dr. Poelsstraat 29. On announced Open Schacht weekends, visits to the monument combine a film and guided tour lasting about ninety minutes. The shaft and winding machinery are central to the visit.

Archaeology in the city

De Vondst
De Vondst at Raadhuisplein 20 brings together a public area, the provincial depot and the Restaura conservation workshop. Its presentation connects excavated objects with the steps preceding their arrival in a display case. Guided visits through the different departments are a separate form of visit. The photograph shows the building in April 2025.
