A music box and a painting call for different kinds of attention. In Bennekom, the Kijk en Luistermuseum demonstrates mechanical musical instruments; in Otterlo, the Kröller-Müller Museum brings together paintings and sculpture. Both towns belong to the municipality of Ede, but they are separate destinations. A museum day here therefore includes a journey between visits, with time for lunch along the way.

At Kröller-Müller, Helene Kröller-Müller’s collection takes centre stage, including work by Vincent van Gogh and other nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists. The museum stands in De Hoge Veluwe National Park. Bennekom explores the technology of music before radio and streaming: music boxes, musical cabinets, street pianos and barrel organs. Demonstrations explain how movement becomes sound.

The landscape offers another way into the municipality. The Wekeromse Zand combines open drifting sand with woods and heath. On the Ginkelse Heide, a flock of sheep is part of the use and management of the heathland. Each nature area has a place of its own alongside the museum day, giving art collections, musical technology and landscape room to tell their different stories.

The Ginkelse Heide lies east of Ede, near the N224. Veluwe heath sheep graze the heath and have their shelter at the sheepfold on Verlengde Arnhemseweg. The landscape is linked to the Allied airborne landings of September 1944. The photograph shows the heath with a flock of sheep in 2012.

The Wekeromse Zand

The Wekeromse Zand is an area of drifting sand, woods and heath. Different habitats meet particularly along the edges of the open sand. Marked walking routes cross the area. Because of the grazing heath cattle and other wildlife, dogs are not permitted, including on a lead.
