Delft

A painted dish and a painting can both reveal craftsmanship, but they invite different kinds of visits. At Royal Delft, the subject is pottery: a historical and modern collection and the factory where Delft Blue is made. The Vermeer Centrum Delft focuses on the painter, his techniques and his surroundings. The works displayed there are full-size digital reproductions.
Those reproductions bring Vermeer’s work together and allow differences in light, colour and perspective to be explored. At Royal Delft, attention instead centres on the object and the craft behind its decoration. The example day below combines the two places, allowing an hour and a half for lunch and travel from Rotterdamseweg to the old centre.
Two other Delft collections provide separate additions. Plants and their technical applications are central to TU Delft’s Hortus Botanicus, which opens to the public each year from March through October. Paul Tétar van Elven’s home preserves the surroundings of a nineteenth-century artist and collector. The same attention to materials and ways of looking therefore takes a different form at each of these places.

Plants and technology
TU Delft’s Hortus Botanicus studies plants and their applications, from raw materials to inspiration for technology. The garden at Poortlandplein 6 opens to the public annually from 1 March to 31 October, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. A garden visit forms a separate seasonal outing.
