Arnhem

A paper mill among trees at the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum shows how buildings and everyday work belong together. The museum gathers stories about living and working in the Netherlands. Until 4 December 2026 inclusive, the grounds open as a walking park only and the historic buildings are closed. The morning in this example therefore stays outdoors, concentrating on the buildings as part of the park.
Eusebiuskerk brings different periods of Arnhem together in one building. Presentations in the church hall and cellars examine Guelders; the tower focuses on the Battle of Arnhem. Glass balconies add views over the city. The sections have different routes and accessibility, so a visit involves more than looking at the outside of a church.
Beyond this day's programme, history takes other forms. Huis Zypendaal preserves a historic interior with portraits of the Brantsen family. Museum Bronbeek examines the Dutch colonial presence in Indonesia through personal accounts and objects. These places call for separate visits. Together, the selection shows how Arnhem accommodates everyday life, family history, war and colonial history without fitting everything into one continuous city walk.

A day in Arnhem

This example begins in the Openluchtmuseum walking park, open from 11:00 to 16:00 until 4 December 2026 inclusive. The historic buildings remain closed. An hour and a half separates the morning stop from Eusebiuskerk for lunch and travel into the city centre. The afternoon assumes an ordinary church visiting day.
11:00–12:30 · Nederlands Openluchtmuseum
The morning is an outdoor walk among historic buildings and their surroundings. The suggested window covers a selection of the park and includes no entry to the closed interiors.
14:00–16:00 · Eusebiuskerk
The afternoon allows two hours for Eusebiuskerk. Presentations about Guelders and the Battle of Arnhem connect the building with city history. The cellars and glass balconies have different accessibility conditions from the church hall.
More about Arnhem

Museum Bronbeek examines Dutch colonial history. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the colonial presence in Indonesia between 1816 and 1962. Personal accounts, objects, photographs and videos connect conquest and administration with daily life, the struggle for independence and the continuing effects of that past. Bronbeek is outside the proposed day route.

Keeping and telling

Family history at Huis Zypendaal
Huis Zypendaal is an eighteenth-century country house on Arnhem's edge. Historic rooms and family portraits refer to five generations of the Brantsens. Silver and old photographs add to that account. The house has its own visiting arrangements and offers a separate addition to the day in the park and city centre.
