Almere

At Kunstlinie, a glass façade stands between Esplanade and Weerwater. Rectangular volumes give the cultural building a different scale from the open space beside the water. The design by Japanese practice SANAA can therefore also be seen from outside: the building belongs to the cityscape alongside the programme taking place within it. The Kunsthal is closed, so the example day below includes only an exterior stop.
Stadslandgoed de Kemphaan shifts attention to Almeerderhout. Woodland, a city farm and different activities occupy a setting distinct from the centre. The estate itself and the separate operators each have their own role. A walk around the grounds differs from admission to an animal park or an organised activity.
These two places need room between visits. A morning on Esplanade and an afternoon at Kemphaan therefore form a selection for a day with lunch and travel in between. Landscape is part of the subject: at Weerwater, the open shore shapes the view of the building, while trees and water structure the grounds at Kemphaan. Almere becomes legible through the relationship between buildings and the space around them.

A day in Almere

This example connects an outdoor stop in the centre with an afternoon on the estate. There is room for lunch and travel between the locations. The Kunsthal is closed, so the morning concerns the building seen from Esplanade. Activities at Kemphaan are separate from this general walk.
11:00–12:30 · Kunstlinie · Esplanade
The morning is for the exterior of Kunstlinie and the space beside Weerwater. The glass façade and rectangular auditorium volumes provide the subject of this architectural stop.
14:00–16:00 · Stadslandgoed de Kemphaan
After lunch and travel comes a walk at Kemphaan, in a woodland setting. Visiting a separate operator, such as an animal park, is another option with its own admission and times.

More about Almere

SANAA designed Kunstlinie beside Weerwater. Its low sections and taller auditorium volumes can be seen together from Esplanade. The waterfront setting gives the glass façade an open space opposite it. Architecture provides a subject for a visit to the centre alongside the cultural programme.

Woodland and estate

Outdoor space at Kemphaan
The city farm and organic farmers market connect the estate with food and agriculture. Kemphaan also occupies a woodland setting. Different uses of land come together in the same place, outside the buildings of the centre.
